“Geometry and conceptual symmetry: A cross-linguistic corpus-based study on spatial particles in Mandarin and English”



Geometrically speaking, the space we live in comes with symmetrical dimensions, such as the horizontal axis with FRONT and BACK. However, it remains unclear whether human beings conceptualize spatial dimensions on a symmetrical basis. This is a niche, where corpus data may be of great help in shedding light on the connection between geometric and conceptual symmetries. The aim of the present study is to show how corpus-based analyses may contribute to a better understanding of our conceptualization of the spatial relations, or in general, of other complex abstract constructs. Specifically, we investigate to what extent bipolar spatial particles (e.g., up/down) on the same spatial dimension (e.g., vertical axis) may exhibit a conceptual symmetry in language use as predicted by geometric symmetry. Spatial particles on three cardinal dimensions — UP/DOWN, FRONT/BACK, and IN/OUT — from two typologically different languages — Mandarin and English — will be analyzed from a quantitative corpus-based perspective. Two exploratory statistical analyses are adopted to find the sub-patterning of the spatial particles: hierarchical clustering (HC) and principal component analysis (PCA). The realization of the conceptual symmetry for the three dimensions will be analyzed as a matter of degree based on two criteria: (1) whether the contrastive pairs manifest themselves as the earlier terminal clusters in HC; (2) whether the contrastive pairs dominate the variation of the same principal components in PCA. Implications will be drawn and discussed in the context of embodied cognition.
